A Busy President's Weekend in Vegas
February 24, 2011 5:27 pm

The first trip of 2011 was a 3-nighter over President's weekend and it was a reminder of why it's a good idea to skip holiday weekends in Vegas... it was freakin' packed! It was very busy everywhere from the Strip to the locals joints. It great to see the crowds returning once again but I can do without long lines at every turn.

The first night was at Tropicana and the last two were at South Point like many trips recently. I might even get around to finally writting a review for the place, now that I have stayed there almost a dozen times! The Trop was a little disappointing compared to my last stay there but still not bad especially considering despite virtually every place in town sold out on Saturday night, they kicked me a comp when I couldn't even get into Sunset Station. The stay at South Point was excellent as always with quite the roller coaster at the Video Poker machine.

One of the main highlights of the trip was the collection of property maps that was picked up over the trip. This may be the biggest update ever with 14 new maps including the elusive City Center map. I have had Aria and Vdara maps since they opened last year but I hadn't seen a complete "City Center" map. It's not a standard property map as the main purpose is to show the fine art collection that is shrewn about the place but it's the first official thing I have seen from MGM with the whole complex on it.

I once again returned to the much talked about "hidden" pizza place at the Cosmopolitan. The place absolutely kills me! I get there at almost 11PM on President's Day and I come in through the bridge from City Center into the second floor of Cosmo near nightclub, Marquee. Like everything else this weekend, the place is packed. I work my way to the 3rd floor where the majority of the restaurants are and its just as busy. However, the hallway to the pizza joint looks dark as I approach it. "Damn it's closed!" I think to myself. I keep walking and sure enough through the dark hallway is an open restaurant and despite the large crowds outside, there are only 4 or 5 people in it! I swear they REALLY don't want you to know it there. Once inside, there is still no menu board; just a counter, a few stools, video game and pinball machine. The staff is incredibly friendly and they sling a good pizza. They are actually almost always open from 11AM until 4AM when the club is open, 3AM when its not and they have now printed up menus which are as classic as the place itself.

I will be furiously scanning maps over the next few days so check back for all of the newly updated ones!
