The Week in Vegas News - July 25
July 25, 2011 10:41 pm

A couple of the big news stories of the week...

Monday, the earnings news from the casino companies started off with a bang with the release of the quarterly numbers from Wynn Resorts. As great as the numbers were, they were overshadowed when Steve Wynn laid into President Obama during the conference call with investors after the release.

As much as I believe both parties, whether in control of the White House or Congress, have failed miserably at their jobs, I don't think we can place the blame for our current economic situation squarely on Washington or Obama in particular. Have they done much to help the rest of us the past few years? No, but when has DC ever really helped us? I have a great respect for Steve Wynn and what he has built in his life but he was a little off-base on this one. Even on the points where he is correct; why doesn't he call his friends, Obama and Reid, and tell them directly instead of launching into a tirade during an investor conference call? I'm sure a man with the wallet of Mr. Wynn can get those guys to take his phone call.

In news from the Poker World, the final table was set at this year's World Series of Poker at the Rio in Vegas. What started with 6,865 is now down to 9 but don't feel bad for Number 10; he walked away with $607,882! The finalists will now have to wait until Nov. 5th to decide a winner, one of the casualties of turning it into a made-for-TV event. They now operate on ESPN's schedule.

The Las Vegas Sun did a story on a potential use of the many acres of empty land sitting on the north end of the Strip, an open-air market. Anything that will drive business down to that end of town would be a good thing now that the Strip essentially ends at the Riviera.

Lastly, news about the increase in flights between southern California and Las Vegas. Allegiant Air is doubling the number of flights from Long Beach Airport and the number of weekly flights from LAX has risen from just over 200 to more than 250. Since SoCal provides upwards of 1/3 of all Vegas visitors, this is actually pretty big news. After years of slashing service, the airlines are betting on Vegas once again. That's a pretty strong sign that hopefully things will only improve economically going forward.

Nice site. I could not see how to contact you directly, so I'll just include this info in a comment. The 702 number in your list of casinos for Flamingo is in error. It should be 702-733-3111.
